India eye 2-0 lead as Christchurch hosts second T20I against New Zealand

India are one win up in the five-match T20I series in New Zealand, and the second game at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Saturday, October 24, gives them a chance to take control early. The match starts at 8:00 PM local time, which is 12:30 PM IST, so Indian fans can watch it in the afternoon.

The opener on Thursday was a high-scoring contest. New Zealand posted 225 for 4, with Finn Allen and Glenn Phillips leading the attack on a pitch that gave bowlers very little. India finished on 230 for 6 and won by four wickets with two balls left. It was a strong response after the visiting bowlers had struggled.

Sanju Samson set up the chase with 67 off 33 balls, scoring heavily in the powerplay. Shreyas Iyer, who is captaining the side, added a steady contribution in the middle overs. Naman Dhir then finished the job with an unbeaten 42 off just 15 balls. The middle overs were less fluent, and India needed that late burst to get home, which is something the team management will want to tidy up.

The series also has some history behind it. India beat New Zealand by 96 runs in the T20 World Cup final in Ahmedabad in March, a win that made them the first team to win back-to-back titles in the tournament. Samson was the Man of the Match that night. This tour is the first white-ball meeting between the sides since then, so the Black Caps will be keen to prove that the final was an exception.

The pitch is the main thing to watch. The surface for the first game was flat and gave the pacers almost nothing, and the spinners were the bowlers who found any success. The second game is expected to be played on the same strip, so it may be a little more worn. That could help the slower bowlers, though the ball should still come on to the bat. Dew was a factor on Thursday, and the evening cool-down may do the same again. That is why both captains are likely to prefer bowling first.

The weather should not be a problem. Forecasts for Christchurch show a clear evening with no meaningful chance of rain, light to moderate winds of about 15 km/h and temperatures dropping into the low teens once the match starts. A full 40 overs is expected.

For India, the bowling is the concern. The attack was taken apart for much of the New Zealand innings, and the openers' pace and Phillips's power-hitting will test them again. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh and Mayank Yadav will need to find better lengths, and the spin options will need to control the middle overs. With the ball, India will hope the extra wear on the pitch brings Axar Patel and the other slow bowlers into play.

The batting order is also worth watching. The top order has been aggressive, with Abhishek Sharma and Samson looking to score quickly from the start. The middle order did not look settled at times in the first game, and a few batters struggled to find the boundary against spin. Naman Dhir's late hitting was a plus, but India would prefer not to depend on a finish like that every time.

The official playing XIs will be known only at the toss. Whatever the combinations, a win would give India a 2-0 lead with three games left. That would let them rotate players and test their bench through the rest of the series. New Zealand know that a loss would leave them needing to win three of the last three, so they have a lot riding on this match.
